Volleyball Team Loses Opener

The Virginia Peninsula Community College women’s volleyball team opened the season Thursday, Sept.7 with a 13-25, 25-27, 23-25 loss at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City, N.C.

“They were nervous. You could tell,” coach Tommy Thomas said. “Definitely with the first set.”

The Gators had two set points in the second set but were undone by unforced errors. They also had chances to win the third set.

“It’s going to happen. It’s only been 2 ½ weeks that they’ve been together,” Thomas said of his players, adding it was MACU’s fifth match of the season.

If the Gators had cut their errors in half, Thomas said they would have won in straight sets.

“We were a stronger team than they were,” he said.

Sydney Wallace had 11 kills to lead the Gators, and Fenix Camarillo added nine.

The Gators are scheduled to play in a tri-match Sept. 9 at Bryant and Stratton, taking on Pitt Community College (Winterville, N.C.) at 11 a.m. and the hosts at 1 p.m.
